tel.search.ch requests with jabber
Marco contacted us a few days ago with his request about allowing tel.search.ch queries over the swiss jabber network.
He activated this service yesterday night.

So from now on you can also use your jabber instant messenger to look up swiss addresses and phone numbers! Just add the user tel.search.ch@swissjabber.ch to your contacts and enter some names or numbers.

Jakob Nielsen just posted a new alertbox about Within-Page Links.
In summary he says: “On the Web, users have a clear mental model for a hypertext link: it should bring up a new page. Within-page links violate this model and thus cause confusion.”

Ok, good for old-fashioned websites. What about more dynamic websites using ajax such as immo.search.ch or roundcube.net?
Especially his mental model for link following does not suit newer developments (imho):
“After you click, the old page goes away. A new page loads into the window, replacing the old page.”

We will see more and more new webpages in the near future which will not be able to follow his old-fashioned recommendations. A change in the user habit will also be needed, though. Check the user comments from our immo service, where we switched from old-fashioned html to an ajax application.

I’m still a little disappointed as he does not mention ajax with a word (or did I miss that)?

Finta Giardiniera

Last saturday I went to the opera. It’s been a while a haven’t been to the opera and I was surprised very positively about La Finta Giardiniera from Mozart.
It was realized with a very modern touch full of small details. If you have the chance to go don’t miss to watch the tongue of the petdog closely :-)
I liked as well the idea from the Opernhaus to show the chanted text on a small screen on top of the arena, so you could follow the story even if you didn’t understand a word. Everything was in italian (which is usually not a problem for me) but in an opera it’s slightly different…

The team had the misfortune that 2 of them were sick and couldn’t perform the show. And as the speaker told us at the beginning there was no way to find a replacement in the whole world who could sing and act the missing roles.
So how did they solve the problem? Well they actually had 4 people to replace the 2 missing. So near the orchestra two people were singing the missing vocals while to other 2 where actually acting without singing. It was just great how they handled it and made the whole event even more special.
“Chapeau” to the team!

Conclusion: If you have a chance to go there, it’s worth it! Very nice.

Realestate search
You can now share your skype status on the web.
Good feature… Let’s show the state in the phone directory as well (thanks Berni).

If you enter your skype id on tel.search.ch like me, other people will see if you are online or not. For privacy issues you must first enable this feature in your settings. This change is only possible with version 2.0 (which is not available for mac and that’s why you don’t see my status right now).
It works similarly for icq as well.

Just use the following examples:

<img src="http://mystatus.skype.com/smallicon/demesmae"> for skype
<img src="http://status.icq.com/online.gif?icq=38672694&img=5"> for icq
Last week we launched a special version of tel.search.ch for mobile phones. The application itself recognizes if a mobile phone or a normal web browser is used. So you can use the same url.
As you probably already noticed, we linked the phone numbers with a callto://. In this way, users with voip applications such as skype or sipcall can phone by just clicking the phone numbers.

So how should we link the phone numbers in a mobile version of tel.search.ch? For the time being, almost no cellular supports the callto:// link. So we link the phone numbers in a way, that clicking on it just starts a call with your mobile phone! If you are interested how it works, just use this scheme for mobile content:

<a href="wtai//wp/mc;+445868545">call me</a>
<a href="wtai//wp/ap;+445868545;2ni">add to your contacts</a>

Pretty useful for a phone book which can be used with your mobile! Try it out…
